44.) LOS USOS DE LA PREPOSICION "ON"

 Juan is on vacation in San Fransisco





1.) La preposición de lugar "ON"  significa: "encima de, sobre o en"
Ejemplos:
-There are a lot of papers on the table  =  Hay muchos papeles encima de la mesa
-There´s a stamp from the USA on this envelope = Hay un sello de USA en este sobre
-Look at all the almonds  on that tree  =  Mira a  todas las almendras en ese árbol
-The office is on the third floor =  La oficina está en la tercera planta
-It´s not allowed to sit on the grass = No está permitido sentarse en el césped
-I put my laptop on my lap  =  Puse mi portátil encima de mi regazo
-She´s already on the train  =  Ella ya está en el tren
-They´re on a cruise in Greece  =  Están en un crucero en Grecia
En este caso "on" significa "por":
-She´s speaking on the phone  =  Está hablando por teléfono


2. La preposición "ON" también se usa para los días de la semana y significa "EL"
Ejemplos:
-It was very hot on Sunday  =  Hacía mucho calor el domingo
-I don´t work on Friday  = No trabajo el viernes
-He will be away on Wednesday  =  Estará fuera el miércoles

3.) "ON" también significa "DE" en estas frases:
Ejemplos:
-We´re going on vacation next week  =  Nos vamos de vacaciones la semana que viene
-He´s on a business trip to Chicago  = Está de viaje de negocios en Chicago

4.) "ON" también se usa con fechas:
-Susan´s birthday is on the 21st of May  = El cumpleaños de Susan es el 21 de Mayo
-There´s a holiday on the15th of August  =  Hay un día festivo el 15 de agosto

5.) Otros usos y expresiones con "ON"
Ejemplos:
-We arrived on time for the class  =  Llegamos a tiempo para la clase (llegar a la hora progamada)
-I didn´t do it on purpose  =  No lo hice a propósito
-All the family gets together on Christmas day  =  Toda la familia se reúne el día de Navidad
-Linda is on a diet to lose some weight  =  Linda está haciendo régimen para perder peso
-There´s nothing interesting on television tonight = No hay nada interesante en la tele esta noche
-Look. That car is on fire  = Mira. Ese coche está ardiendo
The workers are going on strike on Monday  = Los trabajadores van de huelga el Lunes
I like my workmates and on the whole they are very nice = Me gusta mis compañeros de trabajo
y en general son muy simpáticos
-There´s a good debate on the radio  = Hay un buen debate en la radio
-Simon is on the dole  =  Simon está cobrando subsidio de desempleo
-We arrived at eight o´clock on the dot  =  Llegamos a las ocho en punto
-On my way home, I stopped to buy an ice-cream.  = De camino a casa, me paré para comprar un helado
-On the other hand I don´t think it´s a good idea  = Por otra parte no creo que sea una buena idea
-Don´t worry, I´m on my way  = No te preocupes, estoy de camino
-What´s on your mind?  = ¿En que estás pensando?
